Following a career as a public school music teacher, university professor, international conductor and Dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Dale Lonis entered the field of professional orchestra management. He remains active as an artistic and business consultant for professional orchestras.
His recent work includes the development of Music Mentors International and Cognitive Conductor Inc. These endeavors have enabled him to once again actively pursue what has brought him his greatest pleasure and success – the training and mentoring of emerging conductors and leaders. He is the co-founder and program leader of the Distance Learning Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Music Emphasis at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia that, in its first year, attracted the largest graduate cohort of its kind in Canada.
Dr. Lonis is now developing Distance Learning Models for degree programming for other universities throughout the world. His work has also earned him invitations to conduct, consult and teach throughout North and South America, Israel, and Asia. In the summer of 2012, after 12 years of success in Winnipeg, Manitoba with the Canadian Wind Conductors Development program, he created the Cognitive Conductor – Seneca Lake Workshop in upstate New York.
Dr. Lonis shares his own musical talents combined with his extensive research and practical study with noted 20th century pedagogical icons and conductors. These experiences include personal study with Benjamin Bloom, Charles Leonhard, and Bennett Reimer combined with hundreds of hours of rehearsal observation with the world’s top professional conductors including Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado and Kurt Masur.
As a former national level rugby player and university coach, Dr. Lonis combines his knowledge of team building and motivational techniques with his experiences from 30 years of international conducting, teaching and business leadership. He uses humor, high-energy delivery, and passion to share his values, knowledge and skills in the pursuit of beauty, excellence and highest levels of achievement.
