Magee Chamber Choir
Greg Quan
| Director

The Magee Chamber Choir is one of five choirs at Magee Secondary School in Vancouver, BC. This auditioned ensemble, composed of senior level students, is dedicated to creating music at a very high level of choral artistry in a variety of styles and genres. In addition to being in the Chamber Choir, each member of the group is involved in at least three other ensembles including the large 100-voice Concert Choir, a small Vocal Ensemble, and either a men’s or ladies’ ensemble, all directed by Mr. Greg Quan. Some members are also involved with our large band program directed by Mr. Chris Haas, and/or our orchestra program, directed by Mr. Quan.

In 2010 they were invited to perform twice in Robson Square for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and also in the televised Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Paralympics. In 2007 they were in St. Petersburg, Russia; in 2009 they sang in many cities across Japan, most notably at the Peace Memorial Cathedral in Hiroshima. In 2011 they toured Germany, Austria, Italy, and Hungary, where they performed at the San Marco Basilica in Venice, the Dom Cathedral in Salzburg, and the Wieskirche Cathedral in Bavaria – a World UNESCO site. In 2013 they brought their music to the people of Spain, singing in Barcelona, Granada, Madrid and Seville. It was there where they were honoured to sing in both the third and fourth largest cathedrals in the world. In 2015 they shared their music with the people of England and Scotland, and they also shared music in Cuba in 2017.

They have had TV spots where they sang on Global News in 2015 and in 2016 they recorded and had a cameo appearance in the music video for rock band Mariana’s Trench’s hit song Who Do You Love. In 2017, in conjunction with the BC Choral Federation, they hosted one of four concerts in which they sang seven  new songs and raised $10,000 for the Red Cross to benefit wildfire relief in BC. They perform all over British Columbia on their own and with other school, amateur, and professional choirs (such as in 2014 where they opened for and sang with international stars, Rajaton) with a real focus on building a choral community of support and appreciation. The members of the Magee Chamber Choir are devoted to the pursuit of musical excellence and the sharing of musical joy.

In 2015, for the second year in a row, they became the provincial champions, ranked as the #1 School Choir under the age of 19 in British Columbia and #3 in Canada in the same category at the Federation of Canadian Music Festival’s National Festival. In 2014 and 2011 the Magee Chamber Choir won the Provincials and in 2011 was ranked second in Canada.

They also have produced and released five CDs; the most recent, a double album entitled The Fountain of Life and Stars recorded by Mr. Len Christiansen at Ryerson United Church in Vancouver. Other titles include their highly praised 2011 premiere CD For the Beauty… In 2013 they recorded Alleluia and a Christmas CD entitled Sing We Now of Christmas and in 2015, Illumina.
