Durham Jazz is a auditioned community-based organization that offers an enrichment opportunity for students in the Durham Region area, just east of Toronto, Ontario. The organization was founded 9 years ago and has grown to 3 big bands and 2 combos over this time. Many students enter the program in Grades 7 or 8 and then work their way up into the senior level ensembles. Some students are with Durham jazz for all six years.
The students in Durham Senior Jazz are focused individuals who are committed to the ensemble and organization. Ten different high schools in our region are represented by the students in this year’s senior band. Many of the Durham Jazz students end up in Jazz Performance or Jazz Education in programs in Toronto for post-secondary. Durham Jazz has performed across Canada, coast to coast and has had some wonderful trips into the United States on their yearly trips and tours as well as performing extensively in the Durham area.
They are pleased to be here at the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival for the third time. Durham Jazz was thrilled to be asked to do a Showcase concert here in Banff this year and are looking forward to sharing music with you this evening.
