Acadia Junior High School is a Grade 7-9 school located in Winnipeg, MB. The school is a multi-culturally diverse institution that encompasses four core values of “Community, Respect, Empathy and Excellence.” Over 55% of the Acadia student body was born outside of Canada, and the student body is comprised of students representing over 50 different countries and speaking more than 55 different languages at home.
The Acadia band program is comprised of three grade-level concert bands, an invitational wind ensemble, a jazz ensemble, and several chamber ensembles. Over 350 students are enrolled in the band program at Acadia, making it one of the largest band programs in the province. Acadia band students are active participants in many programs across Manitoba, including provincial honour bands, and festivals. These ensembles consistently are honoured to receive acclaim for their high level of performance by audiences and adjudicators.
The Acadia Junior High Jazz Ensemble is comprised of Grade 9 students in their first year of jazz education. In recent years, the ensemble has performed across Canada and the northern United States, including Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Bismarck, ND and Boulder, CO.
The program annually works with prominent jazz artists as a part of the Acadia’s music educator residency program. The ensemble also actively commissions Canadian jazz artists to compose new works for young jazz band. Recent commissions have included pianist Ron Paley, trombonist Jeff Presslaff and trumpeter Dean McNeill.
